ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) is a European Research Infrastructure for
quantifying and understanding the greenhouse gas emissions and sinks.
ICOS Research Infrastructure consists of national measurement networks which are run and
funded by national institutes, universities and funding agencies in ICOS member countries.
ICOS Estonia is the national scientific infrastucture roadmap
project to enable Estonia participation in the European Research infrastructure ICOS-RI.
It consist of the SMEAR Estonia station with its 130m heigh atmospheric tower and several
ecosystem sites in different ecosystems. At these sites we study the sources and sink of
greenhouse gases in typical hemiboreal ecosystems covering Estonia. A main focus is on
forests and peatlands but our interests cover as well lakes and cities.
The national roadmap project is linked to the Estonian Environmental Observatory
infrastructure.
